They just fill a marker up with etching cream, walk over to a new restaurant window some poor bastard sunk his live savings into, and scrawl RAZE in a messy pile of corrosion that costs $1,500 to fix.
Meanwhile, Espo fucking cuts out his name in iron and welds it to the lips of loading docks so all the owners just assume it’s part of the building. He joins an anti-graffiti clean up crews and secretly sneaks his name into the large square blocks. And now he’s giving the entire city of Dublin a makeover. He’s not just writing his nickname either. He’s doing flawless murals that aren’t really graffiti at all. Most nickname enthusiasts claim they’re improving an ugly urban landscape but they’re really just barfing their own egos on other people’s property. Espo is the exception that makes the rule.
PS: Can someone else dig up links to all those other projects? I don’t want to.

I’ve only heard of the almighty REVS doing the iron/metal sculptures.
Yes many many ‘taggers’ (i don’t consider these jokers to be true graffiti artist) and wack and truly vandalizing property, but there are far more ARTIST out there killin the streets then just ESPO (and Banksy)……what about swoon, blek, shepard fairey, faile, saber, ewok, revok norm, bast, and the list goes on….

At the very least, Shepard Fairey was kind of important at one time and is certainly worth mentioning.
I get the gripes against him, but some of that is just sour grapes because he’s successful.
Maybe this is damning with faint praise, but I’d say he probably does more good than harm.

I should have known better than to tread on a boy-heavy topic like graffiti. Swoon, Blek and Shepard Fairey are just fine but are they really graffiti? Faile glues sculptures all over the place. I guess I like that. I’m talking about the street I live on in Brooklyn. We don’t get Europeans with stencils coming here and doing murals that are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. We get people writing their names on other people’s property. That sucks. There’s a few artists out there but, for the fiftieth time, they represent a miniscule percentage of what most people consider graffiti. Most of it is a pain in my ass.

I hate graffiti so much that I’ve even considered laying in wait for them late one night like Teddy Roosevelt on Safari. I’ll be hunkered down behind a dumpster at 3 in the morning and when I see them pop into the alley with their baggy jeans and hoodies and fluorescent high tops, I’ll hit them with the most silent of weapons, a blow gun and poison darts. After they crumple to the ground I’ll take photos of them laying there with their spray cans cast aside. I’ll call it “Taggers got Tagged.” It will be a great work of art.
