1. TIE: Street Boners and TV Carnage and Vice
Read it because: it has the best youth culture stuff, still
When Hipster of the Decade contender Gavin McInnes left/was pushed out of Vice to do Street Boners and TV Carnage with Derrick Beckles, both enterprises seemed kind of doomed. Would Vice stay relevant without its penis-shaped cool-lighthouse? Would McInnes’ new site capture any kind of real interest without all that branding? Yes/yes. Where Vice has moved towards cleverer and cleverer (and grown-up) content, Street Boners has made young-and-dumb funny and interesting. Each property continues to push through sharp, solid work faster than their lesser-thans.
2. Slate.com
Read it because: it has the best actual news
Owned by the Washington Post, Slate.com is probably the best online-only go-to for news and commentary out there. I like it because almost every piece has something real going for it: all (OK, mostly) killer, no filler.
3. New York
Read it because: it has the best fun — up-to-the-minute Gossip Girl gossip, recaps, star sightings and news — with no pandering.
The Cut fashion blog was into this idea of caring about runway gloss and fashion news earlier than most other outlets; Daily Intel’s constant blasts of info are perfect entertainment. Not always the most supreme writing, but these dudes are on deadline every second. An amazing paper-to-web effort, too.
4. TheAwl.com
Read it because: it’s the best new thing
Former Gawker editors Alex Balk and Choire Sicha (and hilario contributors like my favourite, Natasha Vargas-Cooper) ganged up to do high-quality culture and media commentary (pitting themselves against the instant-reward-reading of Gawker et al) that is serious-but-funny, genuinely intelligent and unusually invested in its own effort. An impossible task getting done properly.
5. Everything Is Annoying
Read it because: it’s the best blog
Aviva Yael is a blogger, video-maker, fashion person, blah blah blah who doesn’t update her blog all that much, occasionally riffs on her famous friends a little heavily, and seems not totally sure about the direction or cause she wants it all to go in. But who cares? She’s super fun, whip-smart and bossy, totally funny and honest but not an over-sharing maniac, and subtly communicates in every post and every link and every photo that gelatinous moment between electric youth and real adulthood, when everything remains possible but you know what it is that you’re after.

It’s weird that the author’s name is Kate Carraway, ’cause I’m pretty sure my mom wrote this
Hope all the cool dads who comment on this site have a wonderful year
Just b/c you’re a bit older, it doesn’t mean you’re any less authentic, and trust me, we all still totally care about the clothes you wear and the music you listen to
Think of how cool your kid will be
so many hyphens
The fact that Slate is number two automatically makes this list invalid.
WHO WANTS TO DO SHOTS OF MUH NIPPLES THEN???
everything is annoying? who’s even heard of it beyond brooklynites?
Those guys need to learn how to duck or put on makeup right.

Hey this article was originally published by accident without its intro (because we were rushing to get out of the office on new year’s eve) — it explains that the list is for the best sites of 2009, not the entire decade. Though you could say Street Boners is the best site of the (beginning of this) decade. Apologies for the confusion. The correct version is here:

It’s when you can get in the Yellowknife times that you know you have really made it.
