i dated a muslim for years, became very close to his friends and family, attended mosque and joined in the celebration of ramadan, etc, etc. in my experience, they were as outraged by the fundamentalists’ actions if not moreso than the american media appeared to be, and sincerely so. there were deep, thoughtful discussions within homes about 911 and other events they believed brought shame to the muslim community and faith. the only difference between muslims and other certain minority groups in america is that they don’t believe in doing “damage control” and spinning things when tragedies like this occur. what they do apparently believe in is reflection, prayer and personal responsibility. they let the chips fall where they may and accept condemnation of actions if it is warranted. there did not seem to exist this idea that if one muslim did something wrong that all should jump to his or her defense and claim it was somehow justified. none of them ever struck me as possessing a victim mentality.

Police: Man held woman captive, read Bible

TOLEDO, Ohio – A man held a woman captive in handcuffs and an adult diaper for three days while he read Bible passages to her, police said.
Troy Brisport, 34, was charged with kidnapping and felonious assault. Bail was set Tuesday at $400,000.
He picked up the woman Wednesday night in Detroit after she told him she had nowhere to stay, and brought her to his home in Toledo, about 55 miles (88 kilometers) away, police told The Toledo Blade newspaper.

The woman told police that after she fell asleep Brisport handcuffed her wrists and ankles, gagged her, undressed her and put her in an adult diaper, then read Bible passages, said police Capt. Ray Carroll.

Nah, I just meant that you’re right that HISTORICALLY Christianity has been as violent as Islam, but that currently it isn’t, at least in terms of murder being done in the name of the religion. I think that the tendency to judge all Muslims based on the actions of a few is artificially amplified for that reason. Non-Islams are clearly more advanced in the tolerance department, ON AVERAGE, than Islams are. We overreact, and ascribe that same fanaticism to every Islam who’s just trying to get by, pay the rent, and not piss off the entire neighborhood.

This is not true. “Incidences of forced conversion were rare in Islamic history.[3][10]” This is from Wikipedia’s entry on forced conversion. Of course, Wikipedia is often wrong, but in this case it cites two authors, one of whom is Bernard Lewis. You can disagree with Bernard Lewis’s opinions, but his facts are indisputable. You can look this up in plenty of history books, some of whose authors are fairly averse to Islam. Or just learn something about the two most recent Muslim empires, the Mughal and the Ottoman, for example.
If you want to hate any religion, it’s very easy to do. I am no fan of Islam. But I am also not a fan of bullshit.

I remember, as a 7th Grader, when 9/11 happened, everyone gave me shit about my ethnicity. I lived in a very Preppie/W.A.S.C. Now, in college, I find sanctuary in Theistic Agnosticism, and view most religion with aloof derision.
The one thing I disagree most with about Jim Goad on Muslims is his idea that Allah is angry. As a former Muslim, I always imagined Allah to be aloof, apathetic, and bored as fuck. He didn’t create humanity to piss Him off; to me, He created humanity to see if the monkeys could do more tricks and set a better impression than the last set of subjects. Instead of always being emotionally involved with humanity, Allah seemed to remind me of the all knowing, all seeing, omniscient director auditioning humanity. Being sent to hell would be more like the Allah opening a trapdoor beneath; once I fell in, He’d close it and shout, “NEXT!” And on and on.

To my knowledge, Intermittently Explosive Personality Disorder (a self-diagnosis rather than an official one, by the way) is not genetic in origin but is instead the developmental after-effect of severely traumatizing events such as, you know, your dad punching your mom in the gut while you were still nestled in her cooch.
