Firstly, the Americans burned down the parliament buildings in the city of York, which was then the capital of Upper Canada. The Canadian government had surrendered to the invaders; effectively ending the war for the local, Canadian people in a loss, not a victory.

Secondly, no Canadian was present during the attack on Washington. British Royal Marines, under the command of British Navy Rear Admiral Sir George Cochrane, had been the malefactors. The Royal Marines were from mainland UK, not Canada.

Thirdly, the White House was only charred, not completely burned down. The fires started by the British had been extinguished by a thunderstorm and a tornado that had hurled through the area. This tornado actually killed upwards of three quarters of the occupying British forces. The British were forced to retreat after suffering such enormous casualties.

In conclusion, only Canadians believe that Canada had any victorious role in the War of 1812. Canadians lie about their role because they suffer from an enormous inferiority complex with their more powerful and more successful southern neighbour, the USA.

And, for what it’s worth, I’m a born and raised Canuck. I just enjoy history and like to get things accurate. Accuracy demands that I admit that the Americans won the war.
