The amazing thing about the Megaupload case is not that someone assumed Swizz Beatz was their CEO. The amazing thing is that Hollywood and the record business is getting away with the claim he cost them $600 million dollars. Hollywood’s profits are up. Pirating scared them and forced them to innovate so they made movies 3D and that enabled a higher ticket price. Same goes with the music industry. They had this stupid model of throwing huge advances at everyone hoping a hit would grow and pirating forced them to come up with a new model. Now they have iTunes.
Pirating saved their asses. So why is Kim Dotcom in jail? Mostly because dinosaurs are rich and can pay politicians to harass anyone who wants to make them extinct. They get away with it because it’s easy to hate a rich guy. Especially when he’s a fat asshole.

That Swiss Beats (I’m not spelling it his way) thing was such a non story. Do we think anyone in that video even knew the company they were talking about? They got $200k cash in an envelope and gave a film crew 15 minutes of their time. They forgot about Megaupload about five minutes later.
Beats is a celebrity who gets paid to promote things. Like all the people in that video, he’s a fucking idiot who doesn’t know the first thing about file sharing or even running a company. He’s the creative director at Reebok too. Does that mean he can do anything other than choose the color of a shoe once a month? Nope.
Rappers aren’t anything more than karaoke singers who won the lottery. Beats is one level higher because he learned Pro Tools but that’s about as hard as mastering a video game.

The real reason he is in jail is the ancient Asian tradition of Face. When UMG slapped his wrist for using their artists to promote his site he should have just ignored them. That song shows the world how little the artists care about the label and it’s humiliating to them. Then he upped the ante by countersuing them which made them look even more ridiculous.
These CEOs are old school big swinging dicks and the only thing they care about more than money is getting slapped in the face by some punk. This has nothing to do with the economy or filesharing or music or movies. It’s schoolyard tough guy shit. Kim Dotcom is a ballsy nerd who fucked with the bullies and got kicked in the nuts really hard.

Megavideo makes millions and millions of dollars on ads and premium accounts, and all they host are copyrighted tv shows and movies. That money belongs to the people who made the stuff, not this fat greasebag.
