I’ve been a fan of Japanther since their Todd P, Brooklyn warehouse show days. I’ve also been meaning to see Ninjasonic (or any member of the Newmore Switchblades really) as you’ve been promoting the shit out of them recently. Anyway, I just found out that they’ll be playing two shows together this week in San Francisco, the breakaway Soviet Satelite state that I call home. The First Show will be this Sunday. The venue is going to be a private residence in the completely residential neighborhood of Ingleside Terrace. Having grown up there (less than a block from the venue), I find it to be a strange, yet appealing location for a noise show. However, given that it will be the most excitement that the neighborhood has seen since the great mudslide of 1942, compounded with the fact that the backyard which will no doubt host the venue, borders the All Boys Catholic High School (that I shamefully regret having attended), somebody might get the gumption to call the police. If that’s the case, don’t despair: They’ll be playing Another Show the next evening, at the Hemlock Tavern in the Tenderloin, San Francisco’s go-to spot for filth and debauchery since 1906. If anything, the cops will arrest people for not going to this show.

Now I know that the San Francisco music scene is a far cry from the violent sound-orgy that is Brooklyn. But that’s the thing, we’re brought up to believe that a ska band covering esoteric folk tunes is as cutting edge as it gets. We have no way of knowing how deep in the dark we are until we see the light. I hadn’t heard about either of these shows until I glanced at a blurb in my local issue of The Onion this morning, and nearly spat out my coffee in gleeful astonishment. I attribute this lack of publicity largely to San Francisco’s skewed tastes, but I’m sure that the financial difficulties of promoting a West Coast tour (even for two considerably successul bands throwing their lots in together) weigh in as well. So here’s what I’m getting at: I happen to know that your blog has a considerable amount of readership out here, and that if you were to, say, mention that either of these shows were going on, they would be a lot more likely to sell out, and a generation of young San Franciscans could discover what so many Brooklynites know all too well: The fly-by-the-seat-of-your-testicles sound that is Japanther/Ninjasonic.

Just to be clear, I don’t want you to publish this letter (unless you see fit to do so for whatever reason). It was hasitly written in the last ten minutes. My only goal is to promote both these shows, as much as possible, and if you’d be able to help that’d be awesome, if not, fuck it.

Yours Truly,

Jon Burton

well, now I know not to attend any newmore switchblades related activities. additionally, whoever wrote this letter should be killed for writing that last paragraph alone, but some of the douchiest highlights included:

    1) “the violent sound-orgy that is Brooklyn” holy shit…who writes like this???

    2) “I find it to be a strange, yet appealing location for a noise show” fuck off

    3) “a generation of young San Franciscans could discover what so many Brooklynites know all too well: The fly-by-the-seat-of-your-testicles sound that is Japanther/Ninjasonic.” I’m starting to think one of the member’s 14 girlfriend wrote this letter

  2. PillHellTom says:

    yes, i agree

  3. cuttybounce says:

    shut up dude.

you know what city really needed japanther? PROVIDENCE. deaddest music scene ever.
this guy is making sf look like it wets its pants and says thank you to any brooklyn import. check out oakland before you grovel, homeslice.

  4. bklyn says:

japanther is pretty old news, especially in Brooklyn.

really nobody gives a fuck about that shit anymore.

17 year old pratt freshmen listen to ninja sonik, and nobody else gives a fuck

  5. gothprincess says:

    ninjasonik is pretty amazing.
    japanther is cool too.

all you haterading cocksuckers can crawl back in whenever you stay festering and miss out on all the fun, but stop lying about whats good and whats not.

you have your taste and the thousands of people who enjoy these bands have theirs. get off the internet and have a real life papi. where you don’t care about the over zealous boy on aderol who wrote this and go find someone you believe in to write about to the blog you read asking to help promote their show.

everyone sucks. im going back to bed to masturbate.

  6. gothprincess says:

by the way they played PROVIDENCE on this tour just last week. sorry you missed it buddy.

  7. gothprincess says:

this guy’s douchebag writing is what makes me ashamed to live in san francisco

  8. gothprincess says:

p.s. who are you trying to impress guy? some faggy music blog written by 30-somethings with no balls who still live with their moms?

  9. jburton says:

No, I was trying to impress a goth-princess so that I might be able to marry my way out of goth-serfdom.
Actually, I wasn’t trying to impress anyone.
Also, I really didn’t want them to publish my letter (just mention either of the shows or their West Coast tour in general) because I knew it would provoke an onslaught of badly punctuated banter.
Also, also, I live in Berkeley, right by the Oakland border, cuntybounce. It rules, everybody knows this; but Oakland’s a far cry from the yuppified dot-com disneyland of San Francisco. That was my point. If I knew it was going to hurt some poor Oakster’s little feelings, I’d have censored myself accordingly.

  10. goughprincess says:

I’m tying a bow on how much the above banter rules and how awesome jburton is.

  11. yknow says:

mi ami is from san francisco. & wooden shjips. lots of good bands there

  12. jeremy b says:

NINJASONIK “with the K, not the C!!!!”

  13. jburton says:

Yeah, lice I said: I wrote this thing in a hurry. Sorry for any inkorrekt spelling on the part of people who are even bigger fans than myself. And just to be clear, I love SF. I just miss the filthy 90′s, bak when it was still kool to hang out West of Mission Street, and there were plenty of homeless dudes who would gladly buy Mickeys for you.

  14. cuttybounce says:

    do not want

  15. jburton says:

    Gough as in the street?

  16. Taeil says:

Who is this guy? Out of his mind? New York cannot fucking TOUCH what is going on in the Bay Area right now nor pull anything off as good in the past 5 years. New York has been been at a lower league since whenever. Seriously, when has any band that comes FROM New York really go toe to toe in any sense to bands like the Coachwhips, Dead Fall, or Annihilation Time???

  17. also haha annhilation time

  18. jburton says:

Uggh, okay! I take back every bad thing I’ve ever said about the Bay. It’s just frustrating how BART turns into a pumpkin at midnight, and bars close at 2; especially after spending four years in NY. But whatever, I can actually afford to live here. All hail our supreme lord Gavin Newsom!

  19. Beefy McManstick says:

How are either of these groups part of a “violent sound orgy”? Shit is vanilla…

Try Voetsek for violent sound orgy, and Lazer Sword grooves way harder than Ninjasonik.

  20. L. BoDeep says:

spoiler alert: when do y’all start jumping on cerebral ballzy’s nuts?

  21. grapenutz crew says:

    on my scraper BIIIIIIIKE

  22. patrick beefstew art says:

    do not want

  23. Ill be on my 10 speed to get there.

  24. WELL I THINK ITS JUST A DIS-GRACE HOW NO BODY WANT’S TO TALK ABOTU HOW THE BOYS IN JAPANTHER HAVE BEEN DOING SUCH AN AWESOME JOB SUPPORTING ARE TROOP’S.

DOES’NT ANY BODY REMEMBER WHEN JAPANTHER WROTE A LETTER TO VICE (THE MAGAZINE) SAYING “WE SUPPORT THE TROOP’S AND WE ARE GOING TO MEET WITH THE TROOP’S TO HELP TO SUPPORT THEM?” WELL ITS ON THE OTHER WEB SIGHT PROBABLY SHOULD’NT POST A LINK, BUT ANY WAYS THE BOYS IN JAPANTHER ARE DOING THEY’RE PART TO KEEP EM FLYING!!! AND TO KEEP US FREE!!! (PS TO ALL THE NYC LIB TROLL’S: THEY DO’NT HAVE TO ENLIST THEIR FIGHTING THE WAR AT HOME)

  25. jburton says:

Just got back from the show on my own scraper bike. It kicked a wide variety of asses. I came for Japanther, but I came even harder for Ninjasonik. Ian threatened to beat the shit out of some kid that was heckling them, and he probably did, although nobody’s sure ’cause it was crowded as a motherfuck.

  26. Goofus says:

This line owns: “No, I was trying to impress a goth-princess so that I might be able to marry my way out of goth-serfdom.”

Everything else about this thread, including the music, and people debating shitty bands, sucks.

  27. the Bronx is playing bowery next week, 4 blocks from my house. But make the drive (train if ur poor) and see them at Maxwell’s on the 22nd it’ll be a way better show. I’m gonna be plugging that everyday, cuz I’m not only the president I’m also a client.

  28. Maxwel says:

coachwhips is bound to give you more boners or kitty-faces, or whatevr this site is trying to do, than jpnthr simply cause they dont play shows nemore. a band that you love always sounds better when you know you’ll never be able to see them live again.

  29. bonemachine says:

true you can touchy feelie at this, but ninjasonik is funny they are so horrible, i live in
tokyo, kids have been puking all the way across the pond. please no more.

  30. poop says:

japanther is cool but ninjasonik is terrible. didn’t go over well.
