Frank, I seriously don’t care. My point was made more in reference to the blog that I found the Mahotella Queens song from. If you view culture from the capitalist definition of property, then yes that is how culture works. Look at the amount of copying that went on in religion (Judaism and Christianity stole various concepts from Zoroastrianism: messiah from virgin birth, good vs. evil, laws regarding proper behavior, etc.). Also look at how artists from the beginning took various techniques and themes from other artists; Picasso even once famously stated, “Bad artists borrow, great artists steal”(or something to that effect). Did the Carter Family ever reimburse the original musicians they got their songs from? Doubt it. What about all the covers Bob Dylan and the whole folk scene did? That was how itinerant bards operated, hear a song you like, change it a bit, then play it elsewhere for cash. I’m not saying Malcolm wasn’t a scam artist, it was fucked up that he didn’t credit the originals, but the overzealous application of that sentiment is retarded. Malcolm does deserve some credit for popularizing South African music. Look to the examples I cited originally to understand my point. Look as well to Keith Richards/Mick Jagger who famously didn’t credit various musicians who helped them write their songs. Also this blog post http://ignorantarmies.blogspot.com/2007/08/race-and-taste.html illustrates my point near the end (I “stole” most of my argument from him).
